The 7`s season is well and truly underway
and we are pleased to welcome our new Kit and Corporate Sponsors on board for
this season and many more to come.
Kinsale 03 / 04 May
Our first tournament of the year saw the squad
return to Kinsale for the sixth year.
With one of the biggest prize funds in Europe
up for grabs Kinsale is a very tough tournament which is run as two completion’s
over two days with the Saturday setting the seedings for the Sunday.
Saturday saw some close run games but Marauders
made the final against the highly rated Irish Rugby Union Presidents team which
was the Irish IRB 7`s squad. Marauders suffered a narrow defeat in wet
conditions that suited the Irish sides style of play.
On to Sunday when the wind and sun had dried
the ground out. The handicapper had got it exactly right as one again it was
Marauders against Ireland in the final with Marauders turning the tables and
winning by 5 tries to 2.
Ledbury 11 May
The Ledbury 7s is growing in stature on the 7s
circuit and this was evident by the quality of sides entered this year.
With a development squad selected Marauders
soon clicked and moved through the early rounds with some impressive 7s rugby.
Having made the semi final spot we came up against the British Army side fresh
from their victory at the Roslyn Park 7s on the Wednesday evening and Captained
by Howard Graham ( the Marauders Captain and Coach when not on Army duty).
As always the Army were well drilled and
familiar with each other play and that was the end of our tournament as we went
down 5 –2.
Amsterdam 17 /18 May
Marauders returned to Amsterdam for the 27th
year and in keeping with many years prior we played under the name of our
adopted clubhouse in Amsterdam “The Café Corso”
Having reinstated the majority of the side from
Kinsale Marauders mad light work of the Saturday pool playing 4 games without
conceding a try and scoring 44 of their own.
Sunday saw a tough draw in the same pool as the
Dutch Champions and the Moldova National side. Once again the superiority and
familiarity of the Marauders saw them win both games conceding only 1 try
against 14 scored.
Quarter final saw us up against our old “Red
Light” rivals Susie’s Saloon. Entering the last play of an extremely exciting
and tight game with the scores at 21 – 21 Marauders got caught in possession in
their own 22 and gave away a penalty. Drop goal to Susie’s game over. All part
of life’s rich learning curve.
June see us move onto Marbella and Rome. Come
back and read how we get on.
